Abstract

Depression is related to health risks such as chronic disease morbidity and suicide. The prevalence of depressive disorder is more than doubled among women in Korea, raising the need to closely examine the factors affecting depression in women. This study is a descriptive research study in which a secondary analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey is conducted. Of the 4,352 female subjects, 3,148 adults over the age of 20 were targeted, and they were classified into young people, middle-aged people, and aged people. Demographic factors, health-related factors, and disease-related factors were included. All data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program for complex sample analysis. Among the young aged, marital status, job status, smoking, subjective health status, aerobic physical activity, weekend sleep time, subjective body type recognition, BMI, and thyroid cancer diagnosis were identified as influencing factors of depression. Among the middle-aged, researchers identified marital status, smoking, subjective health status, subjective body type perception, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis, number of days to walk, sleep time per week, and BMI as influencing factors of depression. Among the aged people, education level, subjective health status, eating habits, subjective body type recognition, and hypertension diagnosis were identified as influencing factors of depression. These results confirmed that the influencing factors of depression in women differ by age group.
