Total Phenolic, flavonoid contents and in vitro antioxidant activity of leaf of Sesuvium portulacastrum. L (Aizoaceae)

K. Paulpriya, M. PackiaLincy, V. R. Mohan

Abstract

Antioxidant activity of the leaf of Sesuvium portulacastrum was studied for its free radical scavenging property on different in vitro models eg DPPH, hydroxyl, superoxide, ABTS radical cation scavenging and reducing power by using different solvents. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were estimated. The methanol extract showed promising free radical scavenging activity in dose dependent manner. This antioxidant potency may be related to the presence of antioxidant phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in the extract. These results clearly indicate that S.portulacastrumleaf is effective against free radical mediated disease.
