Reza Shekarriz Foumani, Marziyeh Narouie, Hamed Taheri

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is the most prevalent endocrine disorder in the world, and it can cause many complications and death in patients. So, it is necessary to find a treatment for this disease. The present research aims to investigate the effectiveness of self-management in caring for diabetic patients. This study has investigated 150 diabetic patients (75 patients in the intervention group and 75 patients in the control group). The patients were randomly assigned to the two groups. Then, the studied variables were measured and the results of the para-clinical tests were compared to chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests. According to the findings, providing type 2 diabetic patients with self-management training leads to a decrease of blood sugar and blood lipids, an increase of HDL, the daily exercise time, and the patients’ quality of life (P≤0.05). Self-management improves the patients’ condition and their awareness in controlling the diseases and decreasing the complications. So, providing the patients with the education of diabetes and its complications should be the first step in treating these patients to decrease the complications. Furthermore, repeated training programs can increase the patients’ awareness, stabilize their learned information, and provide better-caring conditions.
