In Iran, the extract of Cotoneaster frigidus is used to reduce physiologic jaundice according to traditional medicines. This study aimed to investigate the effect of medication “Bilineaster” on the reduction of jaundice in neonates. This study was a randomized, triple-blind clinical trial. In this study, 96 neonates with physiologic jaundice referred to a pediatric clinic in Dezful were selected by the available sampling method. After assessing the required laboratory tests, they were randomly allocated into the case and control groups. In this study, in addition to phototherapy, Cotoneaster frigidus extract and placebo were administered to the case and control groups, respectively, and the level of bilirubin was checked every 24 hours for 72 hours after initiation of treatment. The gathered data were analyzed using the chi-square test, independent t-test, and ANOVA by SPSS software. There was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups regarding gender, age, birth weight, hemoglobin level, type of delivery, G6PD enzyme, and total bilirubin level at baseline (p>0.05). The analysis of variance with repeated measures showed that there was a significant difference in serum bilirubin levels between the two groups at 48 and 72 hours after initiation of the treatment (p≤0.05). This study indicated that the consumption of Bilineaster drop is effective in the reduction of bilirubin serum levels in neonates.
