Patches: A Novel approach for development of topical drug delivery system
Transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS) allow delivery of contained drug into the systemic circulation via permeation through skin layers at a controlled rate. These systems are easy to apply and remove as and when desired. Skin is an effective medium from which absorption of the drug takes place. Various types of transdermal patches are used to incorporate the active ingredients into the circulation system via skin. The patches have been proved effective because of its large a advantages over other controlled drug delivery systems. This review article covers the introduction of transdermal drug delivery system, anatomy of skin, principles of transdermal permeation, various components of transdermal patch, approaches of transdermal patch, release kinetics of drug from transdermal patch, advantages and disadvantages of transdermal patch.
